The Black Spots on your garden stone/patios are actually black Lichen which feed off the minerals within the stone. Once the Lichen has exhausted all minerals from an area of the stone they grow not only across stone but also down into the stone so effectively rooting themselves and making it almost impossible to remove, whilst growing 2mm a year and becoming more and more unsightly.
